Cheers and welcome to our 4th Annual Advent Calendar! Throughout the next month, we will be going on a high-end bourbon journey together and reviewing 25 bourbons from award winning distilleries across America. Starting on December 1st and ending on December 25th - we will get to experience everything from small batches to single barrels that are jam packed with flavor. Please join us in toasting to another incredible year and getting to virtually share some of our favorite bottles from this past year with you!
**This review has been completed by using a Glencairn glass and neat if you want to compare the same tasting notes as DB’s Bourbon Trail. BUT - the best thing about it being YOUR bourbon is that you get to enjoy it that way YOU want to and prefer! As long as it brings us together and you are enjoying it - pour it over ice, add water, or add it to a cocktail! It’s all about what makes you happy and what you enjoy - don’t let others influence you differently!**
Enough of me rambling, let’s dive into what brought us here!
Day 5 of DB’s Bourbon Trail 2023 Advent Calendar
Eagle Rare - Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Proof:
90 Proof (45%)
Distillery:
Buffalo Trace Distillery (Frankfort, KY)
Age Statement:
Aged 10 Years
Message on the bottle:
"Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness- the cornerstones of the birth of a nation, epitomized by the American bald eagle. That nation has come to represent the freedom, spirit and independence of the individual, giving the world products and innovations that are uniquely its own. One such innovation was Kentucy Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Early Kentudy settles created Bourbon, the true American spirit, in the late 1700s. By practice, and protected by law, no other distilled spirit adheres to standards as strict as those established for Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. And few other whiskeys can offer even a glimpse of the great whiskey making found in Eagle Rare. Eagle Rare 10 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey has a sweet, oaky nose and full, complex body. Reminiscent of a fine port wine, this rare whiskey is best served neat, or over ice. Of course, feel free to drink Eagle Rare in such classic cocktails as the Manhattan or Whiskey Sour."

Review:
Cheers to the bourbon that started it all! Whiskey has always been my drink of choice, but in college, it was more of what I was able to get my hands on vs drinking for the taste (sorry mom).
Back when this bottle was reasonable to find, I was referred to grab it if I liked whiskey. At that time, I had no idea of what substituting an Old No. 7 bottle for an Eagle Rare one would bring. Fast forward to now, this bottle is a staple in my bar and always will be.
Nose:
Ohhhh honey, I'm home! A very pleasant nose of honey, fresh orange peel, and oakey vanilla. I could swirl this all day and be content as it constantly invites you back in for more.
Palate:
Palate keeps the honey rolling but initially is filled with notes of vanilla and citrus. As the palate develops the honey really starts to stand out with a cinnamon spice and hint of brown sugar.
Finish:
Man this pour just delivers. The finish is long enough for you to enjoy it thoroughly and make you want to go back in for more. Nothing too crazy and complex but a honey cream flavor paired nicely with hints of cinnamon.
Final Thoughts:
To me, Eagle Rare is an absolute honey bomb that is paired perfectly with hints of vanilla, citrus, oak and spice. At 90 proof this bourbon isn’t here for a marathon or complexed finish but it's sweet and flavorful.
With all of that being said, Eagle Rare could be the perfect bottle to introduce someone to bourbon. Just look how that turned out for me!
Cheers y’all!
