Day 9 of DB's Bourbon Trail 2023 Advent Calendar - Weller Special Reserve

Cheers and welcome to our 4th Annual Advent Calendar! Throughout the next month, we will be going on a high-end bourbon journey together and reviewing 25 bourbons from award winning distilleries across America. Starting on December 1st and ending on December 25th - we will get to experience everything from small batches to single barrels that are jam packed with flavor. BUT - the best thing about it being YOUR bourbon is that you get to enjoy it that way YOU want to and prefer! As long as it brings us together and you are enjoying it - pour it over ice, add water, or add it to a cocktail! It’s all about what makes you happy and what you enjoy - don’t let others influence you differently!**

Weller Special Reserve

Message on the bottle:

 "W.L. Weller was born in Kentucky in the year 1825 . After serving with the Louisville Brigade in the 1840s, Weller returned to Louisville to open his wholesale liquor business. He is reported to have used the slogan "Honest whiskey at an honest price." His wheated recipe bourbon had a softer, smoother taste that became very popular. Pappy Van Winkle eventually merged Weller's namesake company with the A. PH. Stitzel Distillery to form the Stitzel-Weller Distillery. This delicate bourbon with hints of caramel and honey honors one of America's first Whiskey Pioneers."

Review:

On the label, it reads "The Original Wheated Bourbon." I wanted to learn a little more about that, so off to Buffalo Trace's website we go!

The Original Wheated Bourbon Whiskey features an exceptionally smooth taste, substituting wheat for rye grain. Bottled at 90 proof, this bourbon stands out with its burnt orange color. Its softer flavor notes make this bourbon great for sipping or making cocktails.

There is a lot of history in this bottle and can't wait to dive into this with y'all!

Nose:

• The nose of this pour is soft and straight up caramel. It is very welcoming and light - this pour is not harsh at all.

Palate:

• The caramel rolls right from the nose into the palate with a really nice sweetness to it. As the palate begins to expand there are additional sweet notes resembling butterscotch and honey.

• The finish is really smooth and

Final Thoughts:

Weller for me has always been a sweet caramel bomb and very pleasant to drink from start to finish. If you are lucky enough to find Weller at its MSRP - it’s cheaper than Buffalo Trace and many other bottles out there. Is it the most complex pour I’ve ever had? Absolutely not. But considering budget and taste, I’m not sure if there’s anything better. I am partial to wheaters, but this pour has never let me down. Weller Special Reserve is a very easy sipper and can be easily enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail. The sweet profile really shines in this pour and will always buy a bottle if the price is reasonable.
