Updated: Sep 11

Cheers and welcome to our 5th Annual Advent Calendar!

This month, we’re embarking on a high-end bourbon journey, reviewing 25 bourbons from award-winning distilleries across the United States. From December 1st to December 25th, we’ll explore everything from small batches to single barrels, all packed with flavor. Join us in toasting to another incredible year as we share some of our favorite bottles with you!

Our reviews are done using a Glencairn glass and neat, but remember, it’s your bourbon! Enjoy it however you like—over ice, with water, or in a cocktail. The key is to enjoy it your way and not let others influence your experience.

Enough of me rambling. Now, let’s dive into what brought us here!

Day 6 of DB’s Bourbon Trail 2024 Advent Calendar

EAGLE RARE

Proof:

90 Proof (45%)

Distillery:

Buffalo Trace Distillery (Frankfort, KY)

Message on the bottle:

"Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness- the cornerstones of the birth of a nation, epitomized by the American bald eagle. That nation has come to represent the freedom, spirit and independence of the individual, giving the world products and innovations that are uniquely its own. One such innovation was Kentucy Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Early Kentudy settles created Bourbon, the true American spirit, in the late 1700s. By practice, and protected by law, no other distilled spirit adheres to standards as strict as those established for Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. And few other whiskeys can offer even a glimpse of the great whiskey making found in Eagle Rare. Eagle Rare 10 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey has a sweet, oaky nose and full, complex body. Reminiscent of a fine port wine, this rare whiskey is best served neat, or over ice. Of course, feel free to drink Eagle Rare in such classic cocktails as the Manhattan or Whiskey Sour."

Review:

A Toast to the Bourbon That Began It All!

Whiskey has always been my go-to drink, but during my college days, it was more about what I could afford rather than savoring the taste.

When this bottle was still easy to find, someone recommended it to me as a whiskey lover. Little did I know that swapping an Old No. 7 for an Eagle Rare would make such a difference. Fast forward to today, and this bottle has become a permanent fixture in my bar and always will be.

Nose:

Ohhhhh honey, I’m home! The aroma is very inviting, with notes of honey, fresh orange peel, and oaky vanilla. I could swirl and smell this all day and be content. So good and always inviting you back for more!

Palate:

The palate continues the honey theme, initially bursting with vanilla and citrus notes. As it evolves, the honey becomes more pronounced, complemented by a touch of cinnamon spice and a hint of brown sugar.

Finish:

This pour truly delivers. The finish is long enough to savor and leaves you wanting more. It's not overly complex, but the honey and cream flavor pairs beautifully with hints of cinnamon.

Final Thoughts:

To me, Eagle Rare is a true honey bomb, perfectly complemented by hints of vanilla, citrus, oak, and spice. At 90 proof, this bourbon isn't about complexity or a long finish, but it delivers sweetness and flavor 10 fold!

With that in mind, Eagle Rare could be the ideal bottle to introduce someone to bourbon. Just look at how it worked out for me!

Cheers y’all! 🥃
