Cheers and welcome to our 5th Annual Advent Calendar!
This month, we’re embarking on a high-end bourbon journey, reviewing 25 bourbons from award-winning distilleries across the United States. From December 1st to December 25th, we’ll explore everything from small batches to single barrels, all packed with flavor. Join us in toasting to another incredible year as we share some of our favorite bottles with you!
Our reviews are done using a Glencairn glass and neat, but remember, it’s your bourbon! Enjoy it however you like—over ice, with water, or in a cocktail. The key is to enjoy it your way and not let others influence your experience.
Enough of me rambling. Now, let’s dive into what brought us here!

LARCENY BARREL PROOF - A123
Proof:
125.8 Proof (62.9%)
Distillery:
Heaven Hill Distillery (Bardstown, KY)
Message on the bottle:
John E. Fitzgerald was a treasury agent, who at the time, was the only person legally allowed to carry keys to the rickhouses. He often gave in to temptation and freely took from the best bourbon barrels - uncut at barrel proof.
Today, you can taste this liquid in much the same way as John E. Fitzgerald. Larceny Barrel Proof Small Batch Bourbon is made from a mingling of 6 to 8 year old Bourbon that is bottled uncut and without chill filtration. This Bourbon honors both the superb taste of this lawless treasury agent and the wheated Bourbon legacy of the Old Fitzgerald brand

Review:
We are brining the heat tonight! If this is your first time truly dabbling with high proof barrel strength bourbon - add a small ice cube if it’s too much. This will chill it but also water it down a bit to a more approachable pour. As this pour packs a punch - there is a ton of flavor to dive into and enjoy!
Larceny is one of the more renowned wheated bourbons available and is relatively easy to find. However, Larceny Barrel Proof stands out with its multiple releases throughout the year, often making it an allocated item in many places. Each release offers a unique experience, keeping every bourbon enthusiasts on the hunt for their next bottle. Larceny's popularity isn't just due to its name; it has the accolades to back it up. This bottle specifically was ranked 3rd of Fred Minnick’s “Top 100 American Whiskeys of 2023 — RANKED”
Nose:
The aroma of A123 is rather inviting even with it being over 125 proof! I initially picked up a leather note but as I continued to swirl the pour - it became sweeter. It has black cherry and chocolate notes sprinkled in with cinnamon and fresh bread on the nose.
Palate:
The fresh bread, chocolate, and spice are the first notes to greet you on the pallet. As you peel back the layers of this pour, notes of caramel and maple syrup shines with as it provides a sweetness to the heat as they work together in harmony!
Finish:
The finish provides a bold heat to it. What is surprising is that it doesn’t linger for as long as you’d expect. I wouldn’t call it short by any means but it’s definitely not long. A solid caramel sweetness with cinnamon and oak.
Final Thoughts:
Larceny Barrel Proof A123 is a solid bourbon that showcases the influence of wheat in its mashbill. Its high proof and rich flavors make it a great choice for fans of barrel-proof bourbons! I know I am a fan - wheated bourbon + high proof + easy(ish) to find = Happy DB!
Cheers y’all! 🥃
