Day 1: Buffalo Trace - Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Distillery:

  • Buffalo Trace Distillery (Frankfort, KY)

Proof:

  • 90 Proof (45%)

Message on the bottle:

"The ancient paths of countless buffalo led America westward. Legendary explorers, pioneers, and settlers alike followed these trails, known as traces, through rugged wildernesses to new lands, new adventures, and new-found freedom.
One such trace, called the Great Buffalo Trace, crossed the Kentucky River at a spot just north of present-day Frankfort. Early pioneers settled here in 1775 and, with plentiful pure limestone water and rich river bottom loam for growing exceptional grains, distillation quickly followed. With an unparalleled reputation for creating outstanding bourbon whiskey, the Buffalo Trace Distiller today stands as one of America’s oldest distilling sites.
The bold heritage of the mighty buffalo and the individuality and pioneering spirit of those early Americans are again found in Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey - the very finest bourbon created at the Buffalo Trace Distillery. Traditionally handcrafted, Buffalo Trace has a smooth, confident taste that invites discovery with every sip. Explore Buffalo Trace and taste the spirits of legends."

Review:

If you frequent liquor stores, you’ve probably asked or heard, “Do you have any Buffalo Trace?”

Buffalo Trace is such a staple in my bar that is just makes sense to make it Day 1 of our calendar. Is it the best bourbon I have ever had? No. Is there a better bottle out there that is under $30 - that right there is where the debate starts. For me, I think it’s one the best budget friendly bottles that you can have in your bar (that is if you can find it and find it at a fair price!)

Nose:

  • The nose is inviting, with sweet aromas of caramel, vanilla, and honey. The sweetness intensifies as you swirl the bourbon in your glass.

Palate:

  • The first sip offers a perfect balance of sweet and spice. Some find Buffalo Trace too sweet, but for me, it’s just right, with notes of caramel, sweet butter, and baking spices.

Finish:

  • The finish maintains the sweetness from the palate, which I love. It’s medium in length, with caramel sweetness and a hint of oak.

Final Thoughts:

It’s Buffalo Trace and it’s allocated for a reason. At MSRP - there isn’t a better bourbon at that price point for my taste buds. In an ever changing bourbon market and different expressions “coming out of the woodwork”, Buffalo Trace is the consistency that I need in my life. Will it provide the most complex and unique pour? Sure won’t. But it has always been the perfect pour to get me where I wanted to go and couldn’t have thought of a better bottle to kick off the 5th annual advent calendar!

Cheers y’all!

Day 2: Penelope Bourbon - Wheated

Message on the bottle:

"Penelope Wheated Bourbon embodies our commitment to craftsmanship and versatility. With rich sweetness and a hint of spice, it offers a taste for all the tastes whether you're sipping it neat or mixing it into a cocktail. Blended as a cornerstone of our collection, Penelope Wheated delivers an unforgettable bourbon experience.

Price Point:

  • At DB’s Bourbon Trail, we use BoozApp (not sponsored) to ensure fair pricing on our bourbon purchases.

    • MSRP:

      • $39.99

    • Fair Price:

    • Market Price:

      • $40.99

    • DB’s Bourbon Trail Instant Buy Price:

      • <$40.00

Review:

Penelope has built a reputation for crafting approachable, premium pours, and this wheated expression is no exception. This release swaps out their traditional rye spice for a softer wheat approach, creating a bourbon that leans toward sweetness and smoothness without sacrificing complexity. Let's dive in!

Nose:

  • Stick your nose in and it’s like walking into a dessert shop. First, caramel and vanilla show up like they own the place, followed by honey that makes your taste buds incredibly intrigued. As you revisit, the wheat notes start tossing in whispers of fresh-baked bread and a wink of oak. Just when you think the party’s over and you begin to pull away - there is a hint of fresh apples to round it out.

Palate:

  • This pour is smooth that provides a sweet kick! Caramel and butterscotch lead the way as the headliners to this pour. As it continues to develop, baking spices and toasted oak adds a decent amount of depth. As this approaches the finish, there is a vanilla and honey sweetness that wraps it up.

Finish:

  • The finish doesn’t slam the door on this one. It politely lingers like a guest who knows when to leave. The finish is filled with oak, sweet vanilla, and a whisper of wheat bread as it waves goodbye.

Final Thoughts:

This pour was super easy to sip neat without breaking a sweat. It provides the perfect amount of warmth and sweetness that adds just the perfect amount of complexity to keep you coming back for more. I believe this pour (just like Buffalo Trace) is perfect for any new bourbon enthusiast that want a gentle introduction. As a big fan of wheated pours - I will always try to have a bottle of this on hand. Emphasis on try - because this one will be hard to put down with how easy this was to sip.

Cheers y’all!

Day 3: 1792 - Single Barrel

Distillery:

  • Barton 1792 Distillery (Bardstown, KY)

Proof:

  • 98.6 Proof (49.3%)

Message on the bottle:

"In order to create this unique bourbon, the finest barrels are selected and tasted from the best aging warehouses. Only those barrels deemed "exceptional" are then bottled individually, one by one. This preserves the distinct character of each barrel. This Superior bourbon has flavors of rich butterscotch and caramel notes, delicately balanced with hints of fruit and toffee.

Price Point:

  • At DB’s Bourbon Trail, we use BoozApp (not sponsored) to ensure fair pricing on our bourbon purchases.

    • MSRP:

      • $49.99

    • Fair Price:

      • $50.49

    • Market Price:

      • $51.99

    • DB’s Bourbon Trail Instant Buy Price:

      • <$50.00

Review:

1792 to me has always been a solid pour! Personally, I think this single barrel falls right inline. It's sugar and spice and everything nice! For a price tag around $50 - this is a bottle you can treat yourself to and not sell your soul at the same time.

Nose:

  • Caramel punches you right in the nose like it owns the place. In its corner, it has notes of butter, cinnamon, and maybe even a danish? I may be crazy on that one, but a bakery or raisin/jelly note is definitely there hiding under the oak and spice of this.

Palate:

  • This pour is as true as bourbon can get from the get go with caramel and oak notes just enjoying the ride. I am still caught up on this sweet pastry note but the spice shows up fashionably late, just in time to keep this pour very interesting!

Finish:

  • The finish of this pour is medium in length. The sweetness fades with notes of caramel and raisins hitting a good ol' Irish goodbye as oak and cinnamon stick around for a hug goodbye.

Final Thoughts:

I liked this pour. For it's price point comparable to the Buffalo Trace or Penelope - I would most likely gravitate to them as they are the cheaper options and they fit the taste profile I tend to lean more towards. Although - if you prefer some spice and something a little bit different - this bottle is right up your alley. With it also being a single barrel - you never know what you're going to get so might as well dabble!

Cheers y’all!

Day 4: Weller - Special Reserve

Distillery:

  • Buffalo Trace Distillery (Frankfort, KY)

Proof:

  • 90 Proof (45%)

Message on the bottle:

"W.L. Weller was born in Kentucky in the year 1825 . After serving with the Louisville Brigade in the 1840s, Weller returned to Louisville to open his wholesale liquor business. He is reported to have used the slogan "Honest whiskey at an honest price." His wheated recipe bourbon had a softer, smoother taste that became very popular. Pappy Van Winkle eventually merged Weller's namesake company with the A. PH. Stitzel Distillery to form the Stitzel-Weller Distillery. This delicate bourbon with hints of caramel and honey honors one of America's first Whiskey Pioneers."

Price Point:

  • At DB’s Bourbon Trail, we use BoozApp (not sponsored) to ensure fair pricing on our bourbon purchases.

    • MSRP:

      • $23.99

    • Fair Price:

      • $32.29

    • Market Price:

      • $57.18

    • DB’s Bourbon Trail Instant Buy Price:

      • <$35.00

Review:

If you all have been following along for a while now, you will know that I love me some Weller and wheated bourbons! This specific bottle plays a major part in my bourbon journey and one of the first bottles that I really, really hunted. Living in SC, Weller is pretty much impossible to come by unless you are at the right place, at the right time. Special Reserve is the easier one to find in its lineup, but it is normally priced out of the wazoo if it is just sitting on the shelf. Anyway, this was the first wheated bourbon that I ever tried, and still is one of my favorites to this day. I am super pumped that I am able to share this one with you!

On the label, it reads "The Original Wheated Bourbon." I wanted to learn a little more about that, so off to Buffalo Trace's website we go!

The Original Wheated Bourbon Whiskey features an exceptionally smooth taste, substituting wheat for rye grain. Bottled at 90 proof, this bourbon stands out with its burnt orange color. Its softer flavor notes make this bourbon great for sipping or making cocktails.

Neat! Now onto the good stuff and the tasting notes!

Nose:

The nose of this pour has an incredible burst of caramel. It is soft and inviting, making it a smooth and gentle experience from the start. From the first time to now, I still can't wait to dive into this pour!

Palate:

The caramel rolls right from the nose into the palate with a really nice sweetness to it. As the palate begins to expand there are additional sweet notes resembling butterscotch and honey.

Finish:

The finish is medium in length and satisfying. For a 90 proof bourbon, you wouldn't expect there to be hardly any bite, but this one runs on the sweeter side leaving a lingering impression of honey, caramel, and delicate floral notes. It's a sweeter blend that makes this bourbon a perfect hoice for any occasion!

Final Thoughts:

For me, Weller Special Reserve has always been a perfect little caramel treat, enjoyable from the first sip to the last. If you manage to find it at its MSRP, it's a bargain compared to Buffalo Trace and many other bottles. While it may not be the most complex pour I've ever had, it's hard to beat when you consider both budget and taste. As a fan of wheated bourbons, this one has never disappointed me. Weller Special Reserve is incredibly easy to drink, whether neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail. Its sweet profile truly stands out, and I'll always grab a bottle if the price is right.

P.S. Just incase you didn't believe me that I really enjoy Weller - I named my dog after it!

Cheers y’all!

Day 5: Eagle Rare - 10 Years

  • Buffalo Trace Distillery (Frankfort, KY)

Proof:

  • 90 Proof (45%)

Message on the bottle:

""Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness- the cornerstones of the birth of a nation, epitomized by the American bald eagle. That nation has come to represent the freedom, spirit and independence of the individual, giving the world products and innovations that are uniquely its own. One such innovation was Kentucy Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Early Kentudy settles created Bourbon, the true American spirit, in the late 1700s. Eagle Rare 10 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey has a sweet, oaky nose and full, complex body. Reminiscent of a fine port wine, this rare whiskey is best served neat, or over ice. Of course, feel free to drink Eagle Rare in such classic cocktails as the Manhattan or Whiskey Sour."

Review:

A Toast to the Bourbon That Began It All!

Whiskey has always been my go-to drink, but during my college days, it was more about what I could afford rather than savoring the taste. When this bottle was still easy to find, someone recommended it to me as a whiskey lover. Little did I know that swapping an Old No. 7 for an Eagle Rare would make such a difference. Fast forward to today, and this bottle has become a permanent fixture in my bar and always will be.

Nose:

  • Ohhhhh honey, I’m home! The aroma is very inviting, with notes of honey, fresh orange peel, and oaky vanilla. I could swirl and smell this all day and be content. So good and always inviting you back for more!

Palate:

  • The palate continues the honey theme, initially bursting with vanilla and citrus notes. As it evolves, the honey becomes more pronounced, complemented by a touch of cinnamon spice and a hint of brown sugar.

Finish:

  • This pour truly delivers. The finish is long enough to savor and leaves you wanting more. It's not overly complex, but the honey and cream flavor pairs beautifully with hints of cinnamon.

Final Thoughts:

To me, Eagle Rare is a true honey bomb, perfectly complemented by hints of vanilla, citrus, oak, and spice. At 90 proof, this bourbon isn't about complexity or a long finish, but it delivers sweetness and flavor 10 fold!

With that in mind, Eagle Rare could be the ideal bottle to introduce someone to bourbon. Just look at how it worked out for me!

Cheers y’all!

Day 6: Noah’s Mill

Distillery:

  • Willett Distillery (Bardstown, KY)

Proof:

  • 114.3 Proof (57.15%)

Message on the bottle:

"Noah’s Mill is a Bourbon of extraorainary character and smoothness not found among younger whiskies. Its superior taste and flavor characteristics are made possible only from using the very finest quality ingredients at the outset along with the long years and patience necessary for nature to mellow everything to perfection. We bottle this Bourbon at a strength that best accomodates its age, and were sure you'll enjoy it like no other Bourbon.”

Price Point:

  • At DB’s Bourbon Trail, we use BoozApp (not sponsored) to ensure fair pricing on our bourbon purchases.

    • MSRP:

      • $59.99

    • Fair Price:

      • $62.98

    • Market Price:

      • $71.93

    • DB’s Bourbon Trail Instant Buy Price:

      • <$60

Review:

Before you even pop the cork, Noah’s Mill makes a statement. The bottle looks like it was plucked from an old bar shelf years ago. Rustic looking label that just makes your bar seem filled with wisdom and knowledge.

Nose:

  • The nose on this reminds me of a day out in the woods. It’s very oak forward with earthy and floral notes. There is a perfect amount of subtle smoke and a sweet note of caramel when you continue to dive deeper into this glass.

Palate:

  • Well, this pour doesn’t just tiptoe onto your tongue at 114.3 proof; it comes in wearing steel toed boots. It’s unapologetically bold, but the heat is balanced with flavors of dark chocolate, pecans, and molasses. This pour then quickly shifts into more of that earth rye spice heading into the finish.

Finish:

  • The finish is long and lingering. Oak and spice hang around, but there’s a subtle sweetness that keeps you coming back for another sip.

Final Thoughts:

Noah’s Mill is not for the faint of heart. It’s for those who appreciate some high heat complexity, character, and a little chaos in their glass. If you like your bourbon a bit more inviting vs bite, this might be a good one to do on ice. But if you crave depth and the heat of some drama, Noah’s Mill will feel like home.

Cheers y’all!

Day 7: Heaven Hill - 7 Year Bottled in Bond

Distillery:

  • Heaven Hill Distillery (Bardstown, KY)

Proof:

  • 100 Proof (50%)

Message on the bottle:

"Bottled-in-Bond: Under U.S. Government Supervision. This Kentucky bourbon pays tribute to the earliest days of the distillery's history when in 1939 it released Heaven Hill Bottled-in-Bond. The namesake brand quickly became the number-one-selling bourbon whiskey in the state of Kentucky. Still today, the craftsmanship poured into this bottle by the same founding family meets exacting standards first set forth in the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897. This historic offering reflects on the company founders' firm belief it takes patience and perseverance to make something of great quality."

Price Point:

  • At DB’s Bourbon Trail, we use BoozApp (not sponsored) to ensure fair pricing on our bourbon purchases.

    • MSRP:

      • $39.99

    • Fair Price:

      • $41.79

    • Market Price:

      • $47.19

    • DB’s Bourbon Trail Instant Buy Price:

      • <$44.99

Review:

What does Bottled-in-Bond mean? As referenced in Heaven Hill's Website to be labeled as Bottled-in-Bond, a whiskey must:

Be the product of one distillery and distilled during just one distillation season, which can run from January-June or July-December
Be aged for at least four years
Be bottled at exactly 100 Proof
Bear the name and number of the Distilled Spirits Plant (D.S.P.) where it was produced, and, if different, the D.S.P. number of the bottling facility

I have went on record in the past to say - 100 proof is my favorite to drink. I still stand true by this and I think it's mainly about consistency. I would assume that comes from the regulated process in making Bottled-in-Bond (BiB) bourbon. Now, will BiB bourbon always provide the most flavor or depth? No and that is where proof will always win and have the upperhand. BUT - if I am having more than one or two pours - Bottled-in-Bond all the way.

This bottle follows suit here and is one of my favorite every day sippers!

Nose:

  • When you think of bourbon, this is the aroma you most likely anticipate. It boasts a rich profile of vanilla and caramel sweetness, with unique notes of toasted oak and toffee that set it apart.

Palate:

  • The sweetness from the nose transitions seamlessly to the palate, accompanied by just the right amount of heat and cinnamon spice. As the palate develops, it reveals warm notes of toffee, vanilla, and a sweetness reminiscent of pralines.

Finish:

  • The warmth from this pour definitely lingers, and I'm all for it! The toasted oak flavor from the nose is evident, and the cinnamon heat on the palate sticks around for the entire pour.

Final Thoughts:

If it wasn't clear at the start of this review, let me emphasize it now – BiBs are my absolute favorite! This is a solid pour that you can't beat if you find it at MSRP. Its sweetness pairs wonderfully with a cinnamon spice, making it perfect for sipping on a cold night by the fire. Who's up for a bonfire?

Cheers y’all!

Day 8: Elijah Craig - Toasted Barrel

Distillery:

  • Heaven Hill Distillery (Bardstown, KY)

Proof:

Message on the bottle:

    • MSRP:

      • $89.99

Review:

As we dive into the Toasted Barrel, I wanted to know what makes it different and off to their website we go!

Charred to start. Toasted to finish. This unique expression innovates on our award-winning Small Batch Bourbon by finishing it in a second, custom toasted barrel: adding an extra layer of sweet oak complexity.

Elijah Craig takes the same bourbon that everyone knows and loves and finishes it in a toasted barrel. This adds a whole new taste profile to the pour. With that being said, I fell in love with this bottle ever since it was released a few years back. I am hoping that it will start to become easier to find - because after we dive into this - I'm sure more of you will love it too!

Nose:

  • This bourbon might be one of the more enticing aromas I've came across over the last couple of years. The sweet notes of caramel and vanilla are complemented incredibly well by a hint of toasted marshmallow.

Palate:

  • There's a solid s'mores and spice vibe through out the whole palate. The caramel and sweetness from the nose linger through out the pour. The pallet on this pour has been thoroughly enjoyable over the past few years.

Finish:

  • The heat and spice blend seamlessly with the caramel sweetness, creating a finish that keeps you coming back for more. Medium in length.

Final Thoughts:

This isn't your typical high-proof punch that many top bourbons offer. Honestly, I don't think I have enough words to fully express how much I enjoy this bourbon. The toasted barrel expression adds a unique dimension to the Elijah Craig pour that I absolutely love. I might go out on a limb and say this is one of my top 5 bourbons. It's definitely in my top 3 within its price range. Every sip leaves you wanting more, and I'll keep buying it whenever I see it on the shelf."

Cheers y’all!

"In 2010, my family and I founded Limestone Branch Distillery with the intention of crafting only the finest whiskey and the dream of restoring the Yellowstone brand to its former glory. The Hand Picked Collection is a series of single barrels, each hand-picked and sampled at the distillery. With each barrel comes its own complexities and one-of-a-kind flavors - every one different than the next. From our hearts to fill your glass, Enjoy! "

Review:

Before reading the bottle, I had no idea the founders were from the Beam family line. After a little research, the history runs deep with this bottle and I definitely suggest if you are interested in learning a little more - review their website.

Our family was there at the start of the Kentucky bourbon business. It all began when a man named Jacob Beam sold his first barrels of corn whiskey.
Seven generations later, brothers Stephen and Paul Beam started their own chapter of the family history book as the proud Kentucky bourbon distillers behind Limestone Branch Distillery. You can taste that pride in every pour of our award-winning craft spirits.

Limestone Branch Distillery opened in 2011 but their bourbon drinks like they have been around forever. I am incredibly impressed with how this pour turned and am excited to dive in with you all!

Nose:

  • The nose of this bourbon presents a classic profile with a unique twist. It exudes an inviting aroma of caramel, vanilla, and oak. Upon swirling and taking a deeper dive, you'll discover subtle notes of hazelnut.

Palate:

  • The palate truly brings out the unique hazelnut notes detected on the nose. Right away, you'll taste hazelnut and baking spice. As the flavors develop, a wave of sweetness emerges with buttery caramel and brown sugar. It's a very pleasant drinkable experience!

Finish:

  • The finish perfectly combines the aromas and flavors, creating a harmonious experience. It has a buttery mouthfeel with just the right amount of spice. Caramel and baking spice notes round out a satisfying mid-to-long finish!

Final Thoughts:

Yellowstone Hand Picked Collections are quickly becoming my favorite single barrel selections. I've never had a bad pour from them and will always grab one if I see it on the shelf! This bottle lives up to its iconic name, offering a very pleasant and unique twist.

Cheers y’all!

Day 10: Henry McKenna 10 Year

Distillery:

  • Heaven Hill Distillery (Bardstown, KY)

Proof:

  •  100 Proof (50%)

Message on the bottle:

"This 10-year-old single barrel is a one of a kind Bourbon and one of the few bottled-in-bond products available. "

Price Point:

  • At DB’s Bourbon Trail, we use BoozApp (not sponsored) to ensure fair pricing on our bourbon purchases.

    • MSRP:

      • $54.99

    • Market Price:

      • $70.10

Review:

From their website:

This high proof, Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon was named for Henry McKenna, the Irish immigrant who adapted his family's whiskey recipe to work with the grains he found in Kentucky. Henry McKenna is one of the longest aged Bottled-in-Bond whiskeys available today, resting in the barrel through 40 Kentucky seasons. Critics agree that this is perfectly balanced Bourbon.

A fun fact that I didn't know before this review was that Henry McKenna is from Irish descent. Irish Whiskey has a long, rich line of history that dates back much further than bourbon. Even so much, that the word 'whiskey' (or whisky) comes from the Irish uisce beatha, meaning water of life.

Bringing a family recipe and tradition to the states - with the new found Kentucky grains and processes - Henry McKenna allowed for this bourbon to become an award winning spirit, while still being able to carry on his family tradition.

Nose:

  • The aroma of McKenna 10 is one of my favorites. It's exactly what you want when you go for a bourbon with its rich notes of vanilla, oak, and sweet caramel.

Palate:

  • The palate mirrors the nose with a burst of sweet honey and caramel. It's incredibly inviting, making you want to savor it again and again. As the flavors develop, you'll notice hints of dark fruits like blackberries and blueberries.

Finish:

  • The finish is just right, with the sweetness perfectly complementing the warmth of this bottled-in-bond bourbon. You'll still catch subtle hints of oak and vanilla.

Final Thoughts:

In recent years, Henry McKenna 10 Year has finally received the recognition it deserves! However, with this newfound popularity comes a bit of a catch-22. The MSRP has increased (which is acceptable if the extra money supports the distillery rather than resellers), but despite the price hike, it's sometimes impossible to find.

If you're searching for an exceptional bourbon, look no further! I highly recommend grabbing a bottle of Henry McKenna 10 Year. Its 10-year age statement enhances the oak flavor, allowing the vanilla and caramel sweetness to blend perfectly with the warmth.

Cheers y’all!

Review:

This small batch has only been around since 2016 and has already, won 4 gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

To dive into the label a little more - I went to their website.

Released in 2016, our goal was to create a unique great tasting high rye content bourbon. The problem is that rye ages much faster than corn. So while our younger vintages had a big rye spice flavor (which we love) the mouth feel was too thin and it lacked the sweet, delicate complexity of a well aged spirit.  Our older vintages had the  smoothness and sweet notes that can only be achieved  by moving in and out of #4 char and caramelized oak for many, many years, but the nice rye spice had been aged out!
So what to do?
Find the perfect blend.
We combined the two. The younger vintages maintain the bold spiciness of the rye, cut down on the tannins and keep it fruit forward.  The older vintage brings in a creamy mouth feel with sweet aromas and taste notes that only appear over time from aging in a barrel. We hope you enjoy drinking it as much as we enjoy making it.

Masterly crafted for one of the best bourbons that you can find on the market for roughly $50 or so. Let's dive into the tasting notes!

Nose:

  • This bourbon greets you with a bold and captivating aroma that immediately draws you in. Dried fruit is prominent. Other notes that are beautifully intertwined here are caramel and oak adding depth and complexity.

Palate:

  • The smooth vanilla and caramel notes add a creamy sweetness that perfectly balances the robust oak undertones, giving it a well-rounded character. As you savor each sip, the subtle yet distinct presence of baking spices emerges, adding a warm, comforting finish that lingers pleasantly on the palate.

Finish:

  •  An incredible balance of sweetness and warm spice that lingers, inviting you back for more. The vanilla cream and caramel sweetness perfectly complement the cinnamon, creating a perfect finish for my taste buds.

Final Thoughts:

Smoke Wagon Small Batch is always vying with Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare for my go-to daily sipper. At 100 proof, it delivers a perfectly balanced experience with robust flavors of caramel, dried fruit, vanilla, oak, and just the right amount of baking spice. The sweetness is beautifully complemented by a welcoming spice that keeps inviting me back for more. Smoke Wagon Small Batch has remained one of my top favorites for several years now.

Cheers y’all!

Day 12: Woodinville Private Select

Distillery:

  • Woodinville Whiskey Co. (Woodinville, WA)

Proof:

  •  116 Proof (58%)

Message on the bottle:

"This truly small-batch bourbon starts with traditionally grown corn, rye and malted barley. All of our staple grains are cultivated exclusively for us on the Omlin Family farm in Quincy, Washington. The grains are mashed & distilled in our Woodinvile distillery, then trucked back over the Cascade Mountains to our private barrel houses, where Central Washington's extreme temperature cycles promote the extraction of natural flavors from the oak. Prior to being coopered, the barrel wood is seasoned in open air, rain, wind, sun, and snow for eighteen months, softening the wood's harsh tannins. The barrels are then slowly toasted and heavily charred to further enrich the wood's desirable flavors. This meticulous process yields a truly hand-crafted spirit with aromas of crème brulée and spice cabinet, as well as notes of rich caramel, dark chocolate, and vanilla bean on the palate with a sweet, lingering finish. "

Review:

When you think of bourbon, Kentucky usually comes to mind. Over the past couple of years, Woodinville has been quietly redefining expectations from way out in Washington State. Their Private Select Bourbon is a testament to craftsmanship, innovation, and a deep respect for tradition—while adding a Pacific Northwest twist. They started with a simple mission: create world-class bourbon using locally sourced grains and pure Cascade mountain water.

Let's dive in!

Nose:

  • The aroma greets you with sweet caramel and vanilla, followed by toasted oak and warm baking spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. As it opens up, subtle hints of cherry and leather show up to add some complexity.

Palate:

  • The first sip is smooth and with caramel and honey stealing the show. As this opens up there are notes of toffee, toasted oak, and pecans. A spice builds without overpowering all of the flavor that leads us into the finish.

Finish:

  • The finish is full-bodied and leaves your mouth feeling a bit velvety. The finish is long and lingers with vanilla bean, charred oak, and a touch of dark chocolate bitterness.

Final Thoughts:

Woodinville Private Select Bourbon isn’t just another bottle. It competes confidently with Kentucky heavyweights while offering a unique regional character. I believe this single barrel adds layers of complexity that bourbon enthusiasts will appreciate. Woodinville Private Select Bourbon is a must-try for anyone looking to expand their bourbon journey!

Review:

If you are new to high proof bourbon - buckle up with this one!!!

Nose:

  • The nose of this pour does not mess around! If you are able to get past the alcohol punch to the nostrils, you’ll be able to pick up Oak and Caramel hints. Make sure you let this one sit for a little to tame it down a bit or add a cube.

Palate:

  • The palate is a pleasant surprise when considering where we started with the nose. It has a sweetness vanilla taste that is paired with a smokey oak and cinnamon spice that rides into the finish. As the pour opens up, I get more of a cherry vibe from this pour as well!

Finish:

  •  It’s hot. No denying that at all. Good amount of cinnamon spice and toasted oak that lingers around for a long finish.

Final Thoughts:

If you want to fully embrace this pour neat and want that burn, I believe in ya! I do think it’s good, neat and provides a pleasant palate. BUT - I believe it’s great with a cube or on the rocks. It completely cuts that heat down and allows for the whole pour to be pleasant vs just the palate. With a drop of water or two, it begins to drink similar to a Stagg Jr and becomes an alternative grab in my opinion with how hard that is to find. I really enjoy the hints of cherry and sweetness despite its heat.

Cheers y’all!

Review:

We are brining the heat tonight! If this is your first time truly dabbling with high proof barrel strength bourbon - add a small ice cube if it’s too much. This will chill it but also water it down a bit to a more approachable pour. As this pour packs a punch - there is a ton of flavor to dive into and enjoy!

Larceny is one of the more renowned wheated bourbons available and is relatively easy to find. However, Larceny Barrel Proof stands out with its multiple releases throughout the year, often making it an allocated item in many places. Each release offers a unique experience, keeping every bourbon enthusiasts on the hunt for their next bottle. Larceny's popularity isn't just due to its name; it has the accolades to back it up.

Nose:

  • The aroma is rather inviting even with it being over 125 proof! I initially picked up a leather note but as I continued to swirl the pour - it became sweeter. It has black cherry and chocolate notes sprinkled in with cinnamon and fresh bread on the nose.

Palate:

  • The fresh bread, chocolate, and spice are the first notes to greet you on the pallet. As you peel back the layers of this pour, notes of caramel and maple syrup shines with as it provides a sweetness to the heat as they work together in harmony!

Finish:

  •  The finish provides a bold heat to it. What is surprising is that it doesn’t linger for as long as you’d expect. I wouldn’t call it short by any means but it’s definitely not long. A solid caramel sweetness with cinnamon and oak.

Final Thoughts:

Larceny Barrel Proof is a solid bourbon that showcases the influence of wheat in its mashbill. Its high proof and rich flavors make it a great choice for fans of barrel-proof bourbons! I know I am a fan - wheated bourbon + high proof + easy(ish) to find = Happy DB!

Review:

If you’re a fan of bold bourbons, Old Ezra 7-Year might just be your next favorite pour. Coming in at a hefty 117 proof, this whiskey doesn’t tiptoe into the room—it kicks the door open. But don’t let that scare you off. Behind that strength is a well-aged bourbon with layers of flavor that make it worth every sip.

Nose:

  • The nose is classic Kentucky bourbon through and through. Caramel and vanilla lead the way, followed by a nice layer of toffee sweetness and oak spice. Stick around and you’ll catch hints of cherry and some cinnamon heat. It’s bold but balanced, the kind of nose that makes you want to dive right in.

Palate:

  • Here’s where Old Ezra really shines. The first sip hits with that high-proof punch, but it quickly settles into a rich, layered experience. Caramel and brown sugar greet you upfront, then comes the baking spices—cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. There’s a peppery kick that lingers, but it’s never too harsh. If you add a few drops of water, you’ll unlock more vanilla creaminess and sweeter notes.

Finish:

  • The finish is long, warm, and satisfying. You’ll get oak spice, a little char, and that caramel sweetness hanging around for a while. It’s the kind of finish that reminds you why you love bourbon—a slow fade that keeps you coming back for another sip.

Final Thoughts:

Old Ezra 7-Year is a big, bold bourbon that delivers serious value. At MSRP, you’re getting a 7-year age statement and barrel-strength proof—hard to beat that combo. I wouldn’t say this pour is for beginners, but if you love high-proof, full-flavor whiskey, this one deserves a spot on your shelf. For me, it’s a must-try for anyone who appreciates classic Kentucky character with a little extra punch.

Cheers y’all!

Day 16: Elijah Craig Private Barrel Select

Distillery:

  • Elijah Craig Distillery Co. / Heaven Hill (Bardstown, KY)

Proof:

  •  115.8 Proof (57.9%)

Message on the bottle:

No real messaging on this bottle of Elijah Craig. On the other hand, one thing I do want to note is that Elijah Craig is known as “Father of Bourbon” on their standard bottle. This is the same juice - just straight from the barrel privately selected!

So why is Elijah Craig know as that? To fully understand the meaning of the FATHER of BOURBON tagline, we need to know more about what makes bourbon, bourbon.

A couple quick hitters:

  • Bourbon must be aged in charred white barrels

  • Bourbon needs to be distilled from a blend of fermented grains, and out of those grains, it has to be at least 51% corn.

Okay cool, so how and why is Elijah Craig the "FATHER of BOURBON"?

Below is a little information from their Discover/History page to fully understand their backstory!

"In 1789, Elijah Craig became the first distiller to age his whiskey in new charred oak barrels. Some claim that an accidental fire charred his barrels and changed the whiskey inside. Others say he stored his whiskey in former sugar barrels and was impressed with how charring improved the flavor."
However it happened, Elijah Craig knew he had discovered something great. He continued to refine the barrel charring process, imparting smooth, rich flavor to the spirit that would become known as Bourbon. 250 years later, he is still known as the Father of Bourbon—and we craft our Bourbon today using the same time-honored methods.

Pretty cool if you ask me! Very thankful for Elijah Craig and this bottle that we are getting to enjoy today!

Review:

Nose:

  • The initial impression of this pour is that it is super inviting. It features a fresh bread note with a nice little drizzle of hot honey. As you continue to swirl, a bold cinnamon note emerges, adding a layer of complexity to the nose.

Palate:

  • The first tasting notes that hit me were cherry and rich hazelnut. As the pour continues, an incredible caramel sweetness emerges, making the experience even better with each sip!

Finish:

  •  The finish lingers for the perfect amount of time and definitely draws you back in for more. The nutty flavor in the palate merges seamlessly with the sweetness and kind of leaves a peanut butter finish to the whole pour and I love it.

Final Thoughts:

Elijah Craig Private Barrel Select Barrel Proof is a bourbon lover’s dream. It takes everything you love about Elijah Craig Barrel Proof and adds a layer of exclusivity and individuality. No two barrels are exactly alike, which makes each bottle an adventure. At around $80–$90, it’s not cheap, but for the quality and uniqueness, it’s worth every penny.

If you’re looking for a bourbon that combines classic Kentucky character with individuality, this one deserves a lot of your attention.

Review:

New Riff has built a reputation for doing things the right way—bottled-in-bond, high-quality ingredients, and a commitment to transparency. Their standard 4-year bourbon already turned heads, but now they’ve upped the ante with an 8-year age statement. So, how does this older age statement stack up?

Let’s dive in.

Nose:

  • The nose is elegant yet assertive. You’ll find caramel and vanilla right away, but the extra aging brings out deeper notes of toasted oak, dark fruit, and a hint of tobacco. There’s also a subtle spice layer—think cinnamon and clove—that rounds out the aroma beautifully. It’s warm and inviting, the kind of nose that makes you want to linger before taking that first sip.

Palate:

  • The palate is where New Riff 8-Year really shines. It starts with a wave of sweet caramel and brown sugar, followed by rich oak tannins and baking spices. Mid-palate, you’ll pick up dark chocolate, leather, and a touch of peppery heat that reminds you this is bottled-in-bond. The mouthfeel is silky and full, with just enough grip from the oak to keep things interesting. A splash of water softens the spice and brings out more vanilla and fruit sweetness, making it even more approachable.

Finish:

  • The finish is long and satisfying, with lingering oak spice, caramel sweetness, and a gentle warmth that sticks around without turning harsh. It’s the kind of finish that makes you pause and appreciate the craftsmanship behind this bottle.

Final Thoughts:

New Riff 8-Year is a statement bourbon. It shows what patience and quality can achieve, and it firmly places New Riff in the conversation with Kentucky’s heavy hitters. At around $80–$100, it’s not cheap, but for an 8-year bottled-in-bond bourbon with this level of complexity, it’s worth every penny. If you’re a fan of New Riff’s standard release, this is a must-try.

Old Forester has a long history of producing some of the most consistent and beloved bourbons on the market. But with King Ranch, they’ve taken a bold step into new territory—literally. This limited-edition release celebrates the legendary King Ranch in Texas, blending Old Forester’s heritage with a Texas-inspired twist.

Let’s dive in and find out what that means for the bourbon that’s in your glass!

Nose:

  • The nose has your classic Old Forester attitude with a Texas accent. You’ll get sweet caramel and vanilla right away, but then the unique influence of mesquite-charred barrels starts to show. There’s a smoky undertone—not overpowering, but enough to add intrigue—alongside toasted oak, dark fruit, and a hint of leather. It’s warm, inviting, and just different enough to stand out from the standard Old Forester lineup.

Palate:

  • The palate delivers a bold, layered experience. It opens with caramel and brown sugar sweetness, followed by baking spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. As this opens up, the mesquite influence kicks in with a subtle smokiness that pairs beautifully with some charred oak and dark chocolate. As this goes into the finish, there’s a gentle peppery heat that reminds you of its proof, but it never feels harsh.

Review:

Angel’s Envy has carved out a unique space in the bourbon world with its signature port barrel finish. It’s smooth, elegant, and just a little different from your typical Kentucky bourbon. But what happens when you take that concept and make it a Private Selection? You get a one-of-a-kind experience that pushes the boundaries of flavor while staying true to the Angel’s Envy DNA.

Nose:

  • The nose is where Angel’s Envy really sets itself apart. You’ll get sweet vanilla and caramel upfront, but then the port finish brings in layers of dark fruit—think plum, cherry, and fig—alongside toasted oak and a hint of spice. There’s even a whisper of red wine sweetness that makes this bourbon feel decadent. It’s rich and inviting, the kind of aroma that makes you slow down and savor the moment.

Palate:

  • The palate is a full-on flavor experience. It starts with caramel and brown sugar, then transitions into ripe berries, dark chocolate, and a touch of tannic dryness from the port barrels. Mid-palate, you’ll find baking spices like cinnamon and clove, layered with oak and leather for depth. The proof gives it a warming kick, but the sweetness and fruit notes keep it balanced.

Finish:

  •  The finish is long, smooth, and elegant. You’ll get lingering oak spice, dark fruit sweetness, and a gentle warmth that feels refined rather than aggressive. It’s the kind of finish that makes you want to take your time and appreciate every last drop on this one.

Final Thoughts:

Angel’s Envy Private Selection is a bourbon for those who love complexity and elegance. It takes the signature port finish and amplifies it with barrel strength and unique single-barrel character. At around $100–$120, it’s a splurge, but for a cask-strength, port-finished bourbon with this level of craftsmanship, it’s worth every penny. If you’re a fan of Angel’s Envy or just want something that stands out from the crowd, this bottle is a must-try.

  • The finish is warm and enduring, spotlighting oak spice, caramel, and dark cherry. This hangs out for the perfect amount of time that keeps inviting you back in for more!

Final Thoughts:

Wild Turkey’s 70th Anniversary bourbon is a well-crafted tribute to Jimmy Russell—hearty and expressive, yet rooted in classic bourbon character. Its 8–9 year marriage of whiskeys from Russell’s favorite rickhouses brings depth without over-oaking, and the 101 proof is assertive yet approachable.

Cheers y’all!

Review:

Maker’s Mark kicked off a new chapter of its Wood Finishing Series with The Heart Release—a cask‑strength, stave‑finished bourbon inspired by the distillery team at Star Hill Farm, the “heart” behind the brand. Bottled between 107–114 proof, it aims for a rich, creamy mouthfeel layered with fruit, caramel, maple, and chocolate—very much in the Maker’s wheelhouse, but with an extra dial‑up on depth and texture.

How It’s Made (and Why That Matters):

This isn’t just another finishing experiment; it’s a two‑stage French oak stave finish. Maker’s takes its cask‑strength bourbon and splits it into two batches: one finishes 5 weeks with 10 uniquely cooked virgin French oak staves; the second finishes 9 weeks with another set of 10 staves. The two are then blended, all done in Maker’s limestone cellar—the same cool environment used for Cellar Aged—aiming for a plush texture while keeping the wheat‑driven Maker’s profile intact.

Nose:

  • On the nose, I get toasty oak wrapped in chocolate and brown sugar, with cherry peeking through. It’s wood‑forward at first, but give it a minute: the fruit builds in, and an inviting sweetness emerges. If you’re familiar with Maker’s 46, you’ll recognize the chocolate‑oak here, but this is pour is more assertive and layered.

Palate:

  • The palate brings maple syrup and milk chocolate up front, then shifts to charred oak, pretzel and pastry notes. But in typical Maker’s fashion there’s a thread of sweet vanilla and black cherry that keeps things grounded. There’s a peppery bite that comes and goes which counters the sweetness perfectly allowing it to ride comfortably at cask strength without scorching the senses.

Finish:

  •  The finish leans oak‑driven and warming. Notes of molasses, clove, and dark chocolate linger with this Kentucky Hug. With its high proof the hug squeezes a bit tighter at times.

Final Thoughts:

The Heart Release reads like Maker’s 46 at cask strength, with the fruit, pastry, and chocolate notes amplified and a touch more cellar‑cool polish. The concept—letting the distillery team shape the flavor blueprint—comes through in a whiskey that feels familiar yet freshly tuned for richness and mouthfeel. At MSRP and cask strength, it’s a compelling buy in today’s limited‑release landscape, especially if you appreciate the Maker’s profile and want it darker, toastier, and providing a little bit of a kick!

Cheers y’all!
