Welcome to our 6th Annual and Final Advent Calendar.

From December 1st to December 25th, we’ll explore everything from small batches to single barrels, all packed with flavor. Join us in toasting to another incredible year as we share some of our favorite bottles with you!

Our reviews are done using a Glencairn glass and neat, but remember, it’s your bourbon! Enjoy it however you like—over ice, with water, or in a cocktail. The key is to enjoy it your way and not let others influence your experience.

Day 1: Buffalo Trace - Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Distillery:

  • Buffalo Trace Distillery (Frankfort, KY)

Proof:

  • 90 Proof (45%)

Message on the bottle:

"The ancient paths of countless buffalo led America westward. Legendary explorers, pioneers, and settlers alike followed these trails, known as traces, through rugged wildernesses to new lands, new adventures, and new-found freedom.
One such trace, called the Great Buffalo Trace, crossed the Kentucky River at a spot just north of present-day Frankfort. Early pioneers settled here in 1775 and, with plentiful pure limestone water and rich river bottom loam for growing exceptional grains, distillation quickly followed. With an unparalleled reputation for creating outstanding bourbon whiskey, the Buffalo Trace Distiller today stands as one of America’s oldest distilling sites.
The bold heritage of the mighty buffalo and the individuality and pioneering spirit of those early Americans are again found in Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey - the very finest bourbon created at the Buffalo Trace Distillery. Traditionally handcrafted, Buffalo Trace has a smooth, confident taste that invites discovery with every sip. Explore Buffalo Trace and taste the spirits of legends."

Price Point:

    • Market Price:

      • $32.79

    • DB’s Bourbon Trail Instant Buy Price:

      • <$30.00

Review:

If you frequent liquor stores, you’ve probably asked or heard, “Do you have any Buffalo Trace?”

Buffalo Trace is such a staple in my bar that is just makes sense to make it Day 1 of our calendar. Is it the best bourbon I have ever had? No. Is there a better bottle out there that is under $30 - that right there is where the debate starts. For me, I think it’s one the best budget friendly bottles that you can have in your bar (that is if you can find it and find it at a fair price!)

Nose:

  • The nose is inviting, with sweet aromas of caramel, vanilla, and honey. The sweetness intensifies as you swirl the bourbon in your glass.

Palate:

  • The first sip offers a perfect balance of sweet and spice. Some find Buffalo Trace too sweet, but for me, it’s just right, with notes of caramel, sweet butter, and baking spices.

Finish:

  • The finish maintains the sweetness from the palate, which I love. It’s medium in length, with caramel sweetness and a hint of oak.

Final Thoughts:

It’s Buffalo Trace and it’s allocated for a reason. At MSRP - there isn’t a better bourbon at that price point for my taste buds. In an ever changing bourbon market and different expressions “coming out of the woodwork”, Buffalo Trace is the consistency that I need in my life. Will it provide the most complex and unique pour? Sure won’t. But it has always been the perfect pour to get me where I wanted to go and couldn’t have thought of a better bottle to kick off the 5th annual advent calendar!

Cheers y’all!

Day 2: Basil Hayden - Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Distillery:

  • Jim Beam Distillery (Clermont, KY)

Proof:

  • 80 Proof (40%)

Message on the bottle:

"When Basil Hayden Sr. began distilling his smooth bourbon here in 1796, Kentucky was but four years old and George Washington was President. Today, we make Basil Hayden's Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey using the same skill and care that made it a favorite among America's Frontier Settlers."
"Artfully aged in Kentucky hillside rackhouses then bottled at a smooth 80 proof, Basil Hayden's sophisticated taste remains true to the old Family Recipe. With more rye than a traditional bourbon and its trademark spicy finish, it's easy to enjoy Basil Hayden's any way you like.

Price Point:

  • At DB’s Bourbon Trail, we use BoozApp (not sponsored) to ensure fair pricing on our bourbon purchases.

    • MSRP:

      • $38.95

    • Fair Price:

      • $52.11

    • Market Price:

      • $44.13

    • DB’s Bourbon Trail Instant Buy Price:

      • <$35.00

Review:

Basil Hayden is known for its lighter, approachable style, making it a favorite for those who want bourbon without the heavy punch. Crafted with a high-rye mash bill, this whiskey delivers a delicate balance of spice and sweetness, perfect for sipping or mixing.

Nose:

  • Sweet caramel and vanilla lead the way, rye spice jumps in with a peppery kick, citrus and dried fruit brighten things up, and oak with herbs hum quietly in the background.

Palate:

  • Light and lively—caramel and honey lead, rye spice adds a playful kick, oak and mint keep it fresh, and a pop of citrus closes the show. Crisp, clean, and easy to enjoy.

Finish:

  • Short and sweet—vanilla, spice, and a touch of oak linger just long enough for a graceful goodbye.

Final Thoughts:

If bourbon had a social butterfly, it would be Basil Hayden. This bottle isn’t here to knock you out—it’s here to charm you. Light, approachable, and dressed to impress.

Cheers y’all!

  • Bottled by Duke Spirits (Owensboro, KY)

Proof:

  • 88 Proof (44%)

Message on the bottle:

"John Wayne, or "Duke" to his family and friends will endure as an American Legend, a Dedicated craftsman and a patriot. Duke Bourbon is crafted utilizing John Wayne’s love of a Bold, Smooth, Full-Bodied bourbon from a recipe that until now was unknown-created from handwritten notes and bottles preserved for over 40 years in the family archives. Duke is distilled in Kentucky, the old fashioned way, incorporating the highest quality ingredients aged in charred, new American oak Barrels."

Price Point:

  • At DB’s Bourbon Trail, we use BoozApp (not sponsored) to ensure fair pricing on our bourbon purchases.

    • MSRP:

      • $37.64

    • Fair Price:

      • $56.10

    • Market Price:

      • $41.50

    • DB’s Bourbon Trail Instant Buy Price:

      • <$35.00

Review:

This bourbon rides in like John Wayne himself—smooth, confident, and wearing a caramel-colored cowboy hat. It’s not here to wrestle your taste buds; it’s here to charm them with a wink and a slow drawl.

Nose:

  • Vanilla and caramel stroll in first, tipping their hats. Oak and nutmeg follow like seasoned ranch hands, while roasted nuts and a whisper of cherry add a little campfire romance. As you're about to dive in, you’ll catch a hint of leather—because John Wayne wouldn’t have it any other way.

Palate:

  • Caramel and vanilla lead the charge, honey riding shotgun. Mid-palate brings cherry and apple galloping through, chased by toasted oak and pepper spice. Smooth and medium-bodied—like a bourbon that knows how to two-step without stepping on your toes.

Finish:

  • Short to medium—like a cowboy tipping his hat before riding off. Starts sweet, fades into oak and cinnamon, with a little nutmeg dust kicking up behind. Sometimes a piney whisper lingers, like a breeze through the canyon.

Final Thoughts:

This isn’t a high-proof gunslinger—it’s the easygoing cowboy who tells stories by the fire. Approachable, heritage-driven, and just fruity enough to keep things lively. At $35–$40? Yeehaw, grab it. At $50? You might pause and squint at the horizon. Great for collectors, John Wayne fans, or anyone who likes their bourbon with a side of nostalgia.

Cheers y’all!

  • Bottled By: Smooth Ambler Spirits Co. (Maxwelton, WV)

Proof:

We are very proud of our knack for bringing you great spirits we hand-make, and excellent spirits we hand-selected, and Contradiction is the opportunity to enjoy in a single sip the convergent of those two very different efforts."

Price Point:

  • At DB’s Bourbon Trail, we use BoozApp (not sponsored) to ensure fair pricing on our bourbon purchases.

    • MSRP:

      • $38.78

    • Fair Price:

    • Market Price:

      • $42.63

    • DB’s Bourbon Trail Instant Buy Price:

      • <$35.00

Review:

Born in the hills of West Virginia, this whiskey dares to blend two opposing forces: a soft, wheated bourbon and a bold, high-rye bourbon. The result? A liquid conversation between sweet serenity and spicy rebellion.

Nose:

  • The nose greets you with caramel and vanilla, but linger a moment longer and you’ll catch whispers of dark fruit and a teasing hint of rye spice. It’s warm, inviting, and just a little mischievous.

Palate:

  • The first sip is a gentle handshake—smooth, sweet, and approachable. Honey and caramel lead the way, but don’t get too comfortable. Midway through, cinnamon and nutmeg crash the party, bringing a lively kick of spice. Oak and leather add depth, reminding you this bourbon has stories to tell.

Finish:

  • The finish is like a campfire fading into the night—warm, smoky, and lingering just enough to make you want another sip. A touch of dryness keeps things interesting, balanced by a soft sweetness that never overstays its welcome.

Final Thoughts:

Smooth Ambler Contradiction is a bourbon for those who love complexity without pretension. It’s approachable enough for beginners, yet layered enough to intrigue seasoned enthusiasts. At around $45, it’s a conversation starter—and a keeper.

Cheers y’all!

Review:

Johnny Drum Private Stock is a small-batch Kentucky straight bourbon produced by the Willett Distillery. Rumor has it, Johnny Drum is known for its rich character with an approachable price point. This bourbon has earned a loyal following among bourbon enthusiasts who appreciate depth without breaking the bank.

Nose:

  • The aroma opens with classic bourbon sweetness—caramel and vanilla. Depth is added with a layer of toasted oak and a subtle nuttiness. It’s warm and inviting without being overly aggressive.

Palate:

  • The first sip delivers a bold yet balanced profile. At first you will experience a sweet note of caramel and honey. As the pour continues to open up, baking spices rolls in adding complexity. The 101 proof gives it a pleasant kick without overwhelming the flavors, making it ideal for sipping neat or with a splash of water.

Finish:

  • The finish is long and warming - that is perfect for this cold evening. This pour finishes up with notes of charred oak and a touch of pepper that lingers perfectly.

Final Thoughts:

In a market flooded with premium bourbons commanding sky-high prices, Johnny Drum Private Stock offers exceptional quality at a reasonable cost. It’s robust, refined, and deeply satisfying—a bourbon that feels like a well-kept secret among bourbon fans. (oops!)

If you’re looking for a bourbon that delivers complexity, warmth, and character without breaking the bank, Johnny Drum Private Stock deserves a spot on your shelf.

Day 6: Legent

Distillery:

  • Legent Distilling Co./Jim Beam Distillery (Clermont, KY)

Proof:

  • 94 Proof (47%)

Message on the bottle:

Price Point:

  • At DB’s Bourbon Trail, we use BoozApp (not sponsored) to ensure fair pricing on our bourbon purchases.

    • MSRP:

      • $44.97

    • Fair Price:

      • $45.53

    • Market Price:

      • $47.19

    • DB’s Bourbon Trail Instant Buy Price:

      • <$45.00

Review:

Legent is a collaboration between Fred Noe (Jim Beam’s master distiller) and Shinji Fukuyo (Suntory’s chief blender). Translation: This isn’t just whiskey—it’s a cultural handshake in liquid form. The bourbon is aged in Kentucky, then partially finished in wine and sherry casks, and finally blended with Japanese precision. Think of it as a bourbon that went over seas and came back quoting haikus.

Nose:

  • At first, this gives classic bourbon vibes—vanilla, caramel, oak. The plot quickly thickens as dark fruit sneaks in like a ninja: raisins, plum juice and a bit of wine tannins from the aging.

Palate:

  • As you dive into this one, a sweet Kentucky corn says hello and makes the first introduction. As you continue to dive in then comes the sherry finish, bringing dried fruit and a touch of spice. It’s layered, complex, and a very impressive palate for a finished pour.

Finish:

  • Medium in length with lingering oak and a gentle warmth that feels like a hug. There’s a subtle wine note at the end, just enough to make you raise an eyebrow and contemplate if you are drinking bourbon or a high proof wine.

Final Thoughts:

If bourbon had a passport, Legent would have stamps from Kentucky, Japan, and maybe a quick layover in Italy. It’s not just a drink, it’s a conversation starter. Legent isn’t your everyday pour. It’s the bourbon you bring out when you want to impress your friends who think they’ve tried everything. It’s bold, balanced, and just weird enough to be cool.

Cheers y’all!
